Dry Ice

How to Make Dry Ice – 7 Steps

If you’re not yet aware about dry ice, then it’s time for you to know that it is a solidified form of carbon dioxide.  It is used for a number of things and is sometimes included as a science project.   You can actually make your own dry ice using a CO2 fire extinguisher or pressurized carbon dioxide in a cartridge or tank.  You can acquire the packaged CO2 from sporting good stores, cookware stores or online stores.

Things You Need

  • Carbon dioxide fire extinguisher (or CO2 cartridge or tank)
  • Heavy-duty gloves
  • Duct tape
  • Cloth bag

Note:  If you’re using a fire extinguisher, be sure that Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is specified in the label.  If it doesn’t, it simply means that it contains other chemicals that will deter you from producing the dry ice.

Directions

  1. Put on your protective gloves which should be heavy duty to avoid frost bite from the ice.

  1. Put on the nozzle of the fire extinguisher or CO2 tank or cartridge inside the cloth bag.

  1. You can choose between closing the bag using your gloved hand around the mouth of the bag or close it using the duct tape.

  1. Discharge the fire extinguisher and notice that the bag is being formed inside the bag. If you’re using the tank or cartridge, be sure that the valve is partially open.

  1. Turn off the fire extinguisher or close the valve when the bag already contains amount you desire to have.

  1. Gently shake the bag to remove the dry ice from the nozzle.

  1. Remove the bag and use the dry ice.
