A lot of us enjoy surfing in free Wi-fi zone areas. What we may not be aware of is the possibility that we are also open to unscrupulous people who invade privacy and use information for their own purposes. In an open Wi-fi network, our personal information such as credit card data, images, social security number, bank accounts and other essential details are open and vulnerable to such devious individuals. This can bring us potential overwhelming dilemmas. Good thing that we can opt for something that can shield us from intruders: Virtual Private Network (or most commonly known through its shortened form, VPN).
While a VPN can offer you security, it also enables you to enter certain sites that might be inaccessible in some regions like Netflix, Google, YouTube and Facebook. Your VPN will route your traffic via distant server. Let’s say you are currently in China, you can avoid the filter through VPN settings that would declare that you’re—example—in South Korea. The thing is the country that should be set has a ground server there. Moreover, workplaces such as offices use VPN in order to coordinate or network files and documents without having a person go over a certain computer and share files through USB or any storage device.
Since you’ve been oriented with the VPN essentials, let’s start doing this for your Android device. Anyway, let’s note first that you might be required with third party app—such as OpenVPN Connect—for this action.
- Go to Settings, then choose More Networks via Connections tab, and finally click on VPN. You will be provided with screen lock options through a pop-up window.
- If you don’t have screen lock yet, make one and tap on “+” button which is located right on the upper right. You can then create your VPN. Meanwhile, if you already have screen lock, then skip this step.
- You will be directed to another window wherein you will have to ender server details that your VPN service provider will be giving you. The “Name” customization is given for you to dub. However, “Type” and “Server Address” have to be in sync to the details your service provider had given you with. If you’re an advanced user, you may want to use more advanced options via ticking on the box located at the bottom page.
- Well everything’s done and double-checked, click on “Save” and you’re all done.
